At Templer Park International School Rawang (TPIS), we believe in providing our students with unique and enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Recently, our students had the opportunity to visit the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery, a remarkable place where education and culture meet.

Introducing Children to Financial Literacy

One of the highlights of the visit was the Children’s Gallery, located on the ground floor. This interactive exhibit is designed to introduce children to the basics of financial literacy in a fun and engaging way. Students had the chance to explore how to save, spend, and share money through hands-on activities.

A fascinating feature of the gallery is the money tunnel, where RM1 million is displayed between layers of acrylic. This visual representation helps children better understand the magnitude of RM1 million. Of course, the money is securely encased to ensure its safety.

The gallery also offers exciting challenges, such as the RM1 million challenge, where students have 30 seconds to spend a million ringgit. The challenge encourages them to make decisions about needs versus wants, while learning valuable lessons about responsible spending and saving. There are also interactive displays that teach children where money comes from and the importance of saving for the future.

Students were particularly intrigued by the section where they could stamp their own pretend banknotes, allowing them to feel like part of the financial process.

Exploring the History of Malaysia’s Economy and Finance

The Bank Negara Malaysia Museum offers an in-depth look at Malaysia’s financial and economic history. The museum’s Bank Negara Malaysia Gallery highlights the central bank’s role in shaping the nation’s economic landscape.

In addition, students explored the Economics Gallery, which offers insights into Malaysia’s economic development and how policies have influenced its growth. The Islamic Finance Gallery provided an understanding of early Islamic concepts of finance and commerce, while the Numismatics Gallery showcased the history of currency. Students were fascinated by the Barter Trade game and the River of Coins, which displays various banknotes from around the world, helping them grasp the evolution of money.

Appreciating Local Art and Culture

The visit also included a tour of the museum’s Art Gallery, which showcases a rotating collection of local art. The latest exhibition, titled Gerak Bayang, explores the traditional art of wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, a cultural treasure in Malaysia. Students were captivated by the way the exhibition captured the essence of Malaysian culture through art.

The gallery provided a unique opportunity for students to appreciate the rich history of art in Malaysia, helping them understand the connection between culture and finance.
