Being a polyglot or a multilingual speaker is known for linguistic diversity, which means having the ability to speak, understand, and write in two or more languages. The biggest hobby of polyglots is learning new languages or improving their already learned ones by reading books, articles, blogs, movies, or even listening to podcasts or songs in the targeted language. The mother tongue is usually the dominant language you speak and communicate with very easily. In my case, it is both Arabic and French.
Mastering several languages can be very tricky sometimes, when people expect you to make no mistakes in both or all languages, especially when it comes to writing. For instance, my spoken Mandarin is way better than my written one . I have studied the Mandarin language for a year and a half and I still make numerous mistakes when it comes to writing characters and forming long sentences while speaking. But like the folks say, “Practice makes perfect,” so I used to practise my Mandarin whenever I had a chance to, and I still do, mostly because I lived in China, which made it easier to practise when running errands, buying groceries, using the subway, or taking any kind of transportation.
Learning new languages gives you not only the chance to learn the language, but also to learn the culture and their way of speaking.
When it comes to mother tongue language, it is easy for a person to be fluent as we use it in our daily lives. I used to read multiple books to improve my two mother tongue languages when I was young. I remember I was named after ” the queen of grammar mistakes” in primary school, because I used to make so many mistakes in both French and Arabic. But this definitely does not stop me from improving my grammar in both languages.
Learning new languages gives you not only the chance to learn the language, but also to learn the culture and their way of speaking. Most importantly, if you get the chance to travel to countries that use the specific language you learnt, then you will get to see how the language is used and how native people speak with a lot of expressions. Some native speakers will also use a lot of hand gestures and facial expressions to express their feelings.
I have said it before and I will say it again. I will forever be fascinated with the fact that one world has such a huge variety of people and countries. Each country has its own language and each language has its own dialects. For example, Arabic has so many dialects that each Arab country has a different culture, dialect, and rhythm of speaking. Morocco and the Moroccan language are tricky for other Arabs to understand , mostly because our sentences are a mix of Arabic and French and the rhythm of speaking is very fast.
Lastly, I would like to clarify that my blog is to encourage all readers to always keep on learning whenever chances are given to us. It is never too late to learn a new language or a new subject or even a new skill as long as we live. After all, there are 7,100 spoken languages in this world .
